Festival of Japan 2016

The Festival of Japan is an annual event held in Niseko, from Jan 20th to Jan 27th. The week long festival is designed to displays the local arts, crafts, music and food that is rooted in Japanese culture.

There are many different interactive events held throughout the week that is sure to suit all age ranges and a variety of interests.

There are lots of opportunities to try your own hand at different arts and crafts. You could create a unique souvenir from your time in Niseko, or try your hand at the traditional Ainu instruments, or how about using a shinai (bamboo sword used in kendo), or you could try it all? The best thing is most events are free!!! The Festival of Japan is a great way to learn more about the beautiful and rich culture of Japan while shredding it up on the slops at the same time.

There are also tones of free ski stuff given away each night, including thermal wear, gloves, ski eqiupment & more!!

Some of the activities include:

  • Listening to the musical melody of the famed Taiko drumming (Jan 20th @ Hirafu 188 - 7 to 7:30pm)
  • Demonstrations of Kendo (the ‘way of the sword’) including a live sword duel, and Japanese Martial arts - Jujutsu (Jan 22nd @ Hirafu 188 - 7:30 to 8:30pm)
  • Learning about the soul of Japan; Shintoism and Buddhism (Jan 23rd @ Hirafu 188 - 7:30pm to 8:30pm)
  • Discovering more about the indigenous Ainu culture of Hokkaido (Jan 24th @ Hirafu 188 - 7:30 to 8:40pm)
